Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to know about auditions?

Auditions are held in the first week of term. You will be required to play a short piece of your choice and do a sight reading. More information will be released in September.

Can I try out an ensemble to see if I like it?

For unauditioned ensembles, yes! The first two rehearsals are Give it a Go sessions which means you can trial the ensemble without having to buy a membership.

What different orchestras are there?

The Bristol University Symphony Orchestra is an auditioned orchestra run by the music department and conducted by music professors and/or guest conductors. The Bristol University Chamber Orchestra is BUMS' auditioned orchestra, with one of our student conductors. Symphonia is another music society that is made up of two student-conducted orchestras. Symphonia Symphony is part auditioned - strings are unauditioned but all other sections are auditioned. Symphonia Philharmonic is entirely unauditioned.

Can I join an ensemble half way through the year?

Yes, for unauditioned ensembles, we run another Give it a Go in January. Sometimes, auditions are opened up again but it is dependent on which instruments are needed.

Are there any practice rooms I can use?

During the day, the Victoria Rooms practice rooms are for music students and Vice Chancellor's music scholars only. However, BUMS members are allowed to use these practice rooms from 5pm until 9pm Monday to Thursday and 5pm until 7pm on Friday. There are also three practice rooms in the Richmond Building for anyone to use, which you can book via the app Skedda up to two weeks in advance.

Are there opportunities to perform solo and in chamber groups?

Yes, we have a brilliant chamber music network that puts on plenty of concerts through the year. If you want to get involved, email bumschambermusic@outlook.com

How often do ensembles perform?

All of our ensembles have a winter and spring concert. Some of our ensembles do a third concert at the end of the year. The last performance of the year is at Summerfest where all of our ensembles play in Royal Fort Garden throughout the day.
